Apostille or Authentication Guide

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General Understanding

An apostille is a certificate thatauthenticates thesignature of a notary or a public official for use in countries that are part of the Hague Convention. It's typically required for documents like birth certificates, powers of attorney, or notarized statements being sent abroad.

Authentication is used for countries that are not part of the Hague Convention. It involves multiple steps,  including certification by the Secretary of State and legalization by the destination country's consulate. Apostille is a single-step preocess for Hague Convention countries; authentication is a multi-step for non-Hague countries.

We'll help you determine the correct process based on your destination country. Hague Convention countries require apostille, non-Hague countries require authentication and consular legalization.

Hague countries accept apostilles as final certification. Non-Hague countries require additional steps, including consulate legalization. We'll guide you through either process.

Common documents include birth and marriage certificates, powers of  attorney, school transcripts, notarized affidavits, corporate documents, and estate planning forms.
